According to Mashable.com, The Social Media Guide, 60% of Twitter users quit within the first month. The problem? Twitter is big news; it’s a place for real-time updates on just about anything. It’s made headlines by being a key component to Iranians in the midst of the Iran election, and it even broke the news to MILLIONS about the death of Michael Jackson. So how is it that something leaving such large footprints in history is not hold the attention of it’s users?

Twitter is a fad – a trend – a fleeting moment. If you don’t know how to use it then it’s easy to disregard. Twitter quitters come a dime a dozen. They helped contribute to the 1000% jump in usage from February of 2008 to February of 2009, and they forgot all about Twitterville just as soon as their account had been made. I’ve often heard (or seen) people say what can Twitter do for me? The truth is, you gotta give a little to get a little.

If you’re relying on Twitter to get a job, generate new business for your company, or network you cannot expect your username and a blank Twitter page to be enough. YOU MUST ENGAGE PEOPLE. Pay your Twitter dues, and you will see results. You don’t always have to connect with people on a business-level initially, start by talking about your interests. If you’re a big baseball fan tweet about baseball; build relationships on a foundation of common interests and then talk shop.

There are definitely cases where a user simply can’t find what they’re looking for on Twitter, but often Twitter quitters just don’t take the time to learn these social media tools. Like with anything in life, you have to put forth some effort. Get the ball rolling with Twitter and before you know it you could be conversing with CEO’s and major brands you would never see in a boardroom on a regular Monday. When you quit Twitter, you may also be forfeiting some great opportunities.
